About the Artist: IRIS GRAVILLE
Ever since attending my first hand-bound journal-making workshop in 1997, I’ve been captivated by paper – its texture, color, and as a medium to express myself. Bookbinding is the ideal accompaniment to my passion for writing, providing me the skills to create beautiful (and sometimes, quirky) places to record words. My captivation with paper has expanded my repertoire to collage cards, bookmarks, artists’ books, altered books, and hand-made boxes. I think of the books and boxes as sacred spaces that I hope people fill with things that are meaningful to them. Iris's web site is: www.blueheron-studio.com.

HANDS AT WORK

Portraits and Profiles of People Who Work with Their Hands, the forthcoming book, with photography by Summer Moon Scriver and stories by Iris Graville.  The show includes story excerpts and black-and-white images of the hands of six artists, who are also members of Chimera Artists’ Cooperative:  potter Nancy Bingham, letterpress printer Diana Bower, baker Holly Bower, studio jeweler Tina Finneran, weaver Sheila Metcalf, and blacksmith Craig Withrow.

Scheduled for release in November 2008, HANDS AT WORK is a response to questions about what provides meaning and fulfillment in work. Its stories and photographs offer insight into that mystical, awe-filled rightness that many people yearn for, but often don’t feel, during the long hours spent at work. Such fulfillment can be experienced in many kinds (and perhaps any kind) of work, but the people profiled in HANDS AT WORK find it in labor with their hands.
